FAQ
Is there a question we don’t answer here? Let us know!
Do I need a reservation?
Yes, we require a reservation for both daycare and boarding. This allows us to make sure we have current vaccinations for all dogs visiting The Ruff Ranch and to keep the capacity at a safe and manageable level. Reservations may be made online through the ProPet client portal or by calling us at 805-686-2690.
How do I make a reservation?
If you have a profile set up, you can submit requests online through ProPet or call The Ruff Ranch at 805-686-2690.
If you are new, we can set up a ProPet profile for you over the phone or, if you prefer, you may complete the ProPet Profile Form and we will create it for you. You will receive a welcome email when it is set up and ready to go.
Please note we encourage you to make reservations as far in advance as possible. We are a relatively small facility and fill up quickly.
How far in advance should I make a reservation request?
We encourage reservation requests as far in advance as possible. We are a relatively small facility and fill up quickly.
Online reservation requests for boarding must be made at least three days in advance. Online daycare requests must be made at least the day before. If you are in need of last minute accommodations, you must call our office.
How do I know if my request is confirmed?
You will receive a confirmation email when your booking is confirmed. For boarding reservations, a 50% deposit is required at the time we confirm the booking to hold your spot. A receipt for your deposit will be emailed. Deposits are 100% refundable as log as you cancel 72 hours in advance of your booking.
Do new dogs need an evaluation?
That is correct. Dogs who are new guests at The Ruff Ranch will need to schedule a Daycare/Boarding Evaluation before their first stay. This is a free 4-hour visit where we get to meet your dog, assess their temperament, and make sure they have a nice, slow introduction to our facility. It’s important that they have a positive experience on their first visit. We currently schedule these Monday-Friday between 8am - 5pm. We also like to use this visit to give you a tour and answer all your questions. Clients do not stay during the evaluation visit, which means you can go enjoy yourself in Santa Ynez, Solvang, Los Olivos, or Buellton. When you come back for your pup you will get a full report on how they enjoyed their stay at The Ruff Ranch.
What vaccinations are required?
Current vaccinations are required for ALL dogs on the property:
We require updated Rabies, Bordetella, and Distemper/Parvo.
We strongly encourage the Canine Influenza vaccine.
Vaccination information may be emailed to info@theruffranch.com by you or your veterinarian.
What are your booking and cancellation policies?

These policies are also available for clients in ProPet.

How can I learn more about the Bortadella vaccination?
The articles and videos below are for information purposes only. Please consult your veterinarian on the best choice for you and your dog.
My dog is not friendly with other dogs. Can he or she board with you?
Yes, we can usually accommodate dogs that are not entirely comfortable around other dogs. More details about your dog are required before a booking can be confirmed, but in general, we have the space and ability to take dogs that need to be kept separate.
Are the dogs supervised?
Dogs are supervised at all times. The yards are always supervised by one of our staff members. We have trainers and kennel staff supervising the dogs and ensuring they are safe, happy, and have access to fresh water throughout the day.
Will my dog have time outside to play while boarding?
Yes! At The Ruff Ranch, we only kennel the dogs when it is time to eat or sleep. The dogs spend their days outside in our play yards romping around with new friends or relaxing in the fresh air. We have wading pools, play structures, misters, and plenty of shade to make their playtime fun and lounge time enjoyable.
Do I provide food for my dog?
Yes, it is important that your dog continue to eat his or her usual diet to avoid stomach upset. Whether your dog eats kibble, wet food, or is on a raw food diet, we ask that you provide enough food for all of their meals, plus a bit extra, during their time at The Ruff Ranch. Any extra food will be returned to you when you pick up your dog. We have a refrigerator and freezer dedicated to dog food.
What if my dog takes medication?
We are happy to give your dog any needed medication or supplements during their stay. While we are unable to give injectables, we can give pills and/or drops (oral and ophthalmic) as needed. All we need is enough medication for your dog’s time at The Ruff Ranch and detailed instructions. If your dog requires pill pockets (cheese, peanut butter, etc.) to take their meds, we ask that you send those items as well.
May I send my dog’s bed?
It is not necessary, but you are welcome to send your dog’s bed. We provide sanitized dog cots and fresh laundered blankets for all the dogs. However, a little something that smells like home is always comforting for dogs when they are boarding with us—their bed, blanket, toy, or even your t-shirt!
Will my dog sleep inside?
Yes, all of our kennels and crates are inside our climate-controlled kennel building. We keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The kennel area is cleaned and sanitized daily to ensure a safe and pleasant stay for your dog.
What is your service area?
Most of our clients are from the Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez Valley area, but we also accommodate people on vacation in the area from all over the world!
